Trees4SC plantings benefits FSD3 Schools, Lake City Tree Canopy

LAKE CITY, S.C. (March 17, 2025) – As part of a continued effort to improve and maintain Lake City’s tree canopy, dozens of new trees were planted at Florence School District 3 (FSD3) schools March 12 with the help of Green Infrastructure Center team members, Lake City staff and a several volunteers.

The latest plantings included planting willow oaks, tulip poplars, red maples, and crepes myrtles at Lake City schools:

Governor Henry McMaster Secures Federal Assistance For Wildfire

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Governor Henry McMaster today announced that South Carolina has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support the state's response to the Covington Drive Fire. The grant will help ensure vital resources are available to suppress the fire burning near Myrtle Beach. 

Frazier and Julia Baker: A Tragedy Remembered

The story of Frazier B. Baker, Lake City’s first Black postmaster, and his infant daughter, Julia, is a tragedy. Their cruel deaths in 1898 serve as a reminder of the racial injustices that once gripped our small town. Baker was appointed in 1897 during the administration of President William McKinley. A schoolteacher and father of six, the 40-year-old was chosen to serve as postmaster as part of a broader federal effort to include Black Americans in government positions.

Rabid Raccoon Confirmed in Florence County; Four pets exposed

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed that a raccoon found near Albany and Chester roads in Coward, S.C., has tested positive for rabies. No people are known to have been exposed at this time. Four dogs were exposed and will be quarantined as required in the South Carolina Rabies Control Act.
